James Hardie & fiber cement

A complete exterior system—not just new boards.

Fiber-cement siding combines Portland cement, sand, water, cellulose fibers, and performance additives into a stable exterior cladding. For Eastside homes, the real value comes from pairing the siding with correctly integrated flashing, a water-resistive barrier, trim, soffits, penetrations, and finish details.

Baker Siding Pros plans the exterior as a connected drainage system. That means water is directed out and down at windows, doors, roof-to-wall transitions, decks, hose bibs, vents, meters, and other vulnerable locations.

Design options

Choose the profile, texture, and finish.

Styles can be used alone or combined to create depth around entries, gables, and architectural features.

Horizontal

Hardie® Plank lap siding

The familiar horizontal profile works with Craftsman, traditional, contemporary, and Northwest homes. Exposure, texture, corner treatment, and trim proportions all affect the finished appearance.

  • Select Cedarmill® wood-grain texture
  • Smooth contemporary texture
  • Multiple board widths and exposures, subject to local availability
Vertical

Hardie® Panel siding

Large-format vertical panels create clean wall planes. Pairing panels with Hardie® Trim Batten boards produces the board-and-batten look popular on modern farmhouse and updated Craftsman exteriors.

  • Smooth and wood-grain looks
  • Stucco and Sierra 8 profiles where available
  • Excellent for gables and architectural accents
Shake look

Hardie® Shingle siding

Fiber-cement shingles add texture without relying on natural cedar. They work especially well on gables, bays, dormers, and full shingle-style elevations.

  • Straight-edge layouts
  • Staggered-edge character
  • Accent or full-elevation applications
Architectural

Hardie™ Architectural Collection

Modern panel and Artisan® profiles create deeper shadow lines, channels, shiplap-inspired details, and more tailored contemporary façades. Availability and installation requirements vary by product.

Edges & openings

Hardie® Trim and battens

Trim defines corners, windows, doors, frieze boards, bands, and transitions. Correct dimensions and flashing details matter as much as the trim color.

Roofline

Hardie® Soffit panels

Soffits finish the underside of eaves and can be vented or non-vented as the assembly requires. Coordinated fiber-cement soffits give the exterior a durable, consistent finish.

Why homeowners choose fiber cement

  • Resists damage from moisture when installed and maintained correctly
  • Does not attract termites or woodpeckers
  • Noncombustible fiber-cement substrate
  • Stable appearance through wet, cold Northwest seasons
  • Wood-inspired profiles without wood’s level of routine upkeep
  • Broad range of colors, textures, and architectural styles

James Hardie vs. cedar vs. vinyl

James Hardie: durable, design-flexible, and lower maintenance, with careful cutting, fastening, clearances, and flashing required.

Cedar: authentic natural grain and warmth, but requires ongoing coating and moisture-conscious maintenance.

Vinyl: lightweight and low maintenance, but has different impact, heat, expansion, and architectural characteristics.

The right material depends on the home, exposure, desired appearance, maintenance expectations, and budget—not a one-size-fits-all sales pitch.

Color & finish

Factory-finished or field-painted.

Both approaches can produce a beautiful exterior when the full system is planned correctly.

ColorPlus® Technology

A controlled, factory-applied and cured finish designed for consistent color and resistance to fading, peeling, chipping, and cracking. Matching touch-up practices and handling requirements are important during installation.

James Hardie currently describes a 15-year limited finish warranty; the exact written warranty supplied with the selected product controls.

Primed siding with field paint

Primed products allow a broad custom color selection and coordinated painting after installation. Success depends on dry surfaces, compatible coatings, correct preparation, sealed cut edges where required, and suitable weather during application.

Behind the siding

Details that protect the home.

The visible cladding sheds most rain. The concealed drainage and flashing layers manage the water that gets behind it.

Water-resistive barrier

A properly lapped WRB creates a continuous drainage plane over the sheathing and integrates with flashings rather than relying on caulk alone.

Window and door flashing

Sill pans, jamb flashing, head flashing, and WRB sequencing direct water back to the exterior while preserving drainage paths.

Kickout and roof flashing

Roof-to-wall intersections need correctly sized diverters and clear drainage to keep concentrated roof water away from the wall.

Clearances and penetrations

Required spacing above roofs, decks, grade, and horizontal surfaces helps prevent moisture exposure. Blocks and flashings manage vents, faucets, lights, and utilities.

Sheathing and concealed repairs

After tear-off, exposed sheathing can be evaluated. Any rot or structural concern is documented and discussed before additional repairs proceed.

Fastening and joints

Fastener placement, framing penetration, butt-joint treatment, cut-edge treatment, and manufacturer-required gaps are followed for the selected product.

Warranty note: James Hardie currently publishes a 30-year non-prorated limited substrate warranty for qualifying siding products. Product, trim, soffit, and finish terms can differ and change. Baker Siding Pros supplies the applicable documents for the materials selected; those written manufacturer terms govern coverage.
